HYROX Training for Women in Midlife: My Experience & Why It Works

I’ll be honest - when I first signed up for HYROX Glasgow, I thought: “What on earth am I doing?!” It looked intense, sweaty, and a bit scary. But I wanted a challenge, and I wanted to shake up my own training.
As a PT, I’m always looking for ways to keep exercise exciting and relevant - not just for me, but for my clients too. And as a woman who had a baby at 41 and is now navigating the shifts of perimenopause myself, I also know first-hand how our bodies change. We can’t always train the way we used to in our twenties, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be strong, fit, and confident in midlife.
HYROX gave me a new sense of purpose in my training, but it also reminded me of something really important: the best workouts are the ones that fit into your life, build your confidence, and help you feel capable every single day. And it was amazing seeing it work for all shapes, ages and levels of ability.

Why HYROX-Style Training Works (Especially in Midlife)
HYROX is often described as the world’s biggest indoor fitness race, combining strength stations (like sled pushes, farmer’s carries, and wall balls) with running. Sounds tough, right? But here’s the thing: the movements are simple, functional, and can be scaled to any ability.
What really struck me is how much it aligns with what I already do with clients: blending strength and cardiovascular training into a total-body workout. And the benefits go so far beyond just weight loss.
💛 Better Sleep
Exercise like this helps regulate your hormones, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality, something that’s often disrupted during perimenopause and menopause.
💛 Less Joint Pain
Functional movements build muscle around your joints, improving stability and reducing stiffness. Strength work isn’t just about looking toned, it’s about protecting your body for the long term.
💛 More Energy, Less Fatigue
Short, sharp sessions get your heart rate up, improve circulation, and leave you feeling energised instead of drained.
💛 Confidence in Everyday Life
Carrying shopping, climbing stairs, running after kids (or grandkids!). The strength and cardio combination makes daily life feel easier and more enjoyable.
This isn’t about punishing workouts. It’s about training smarter, protecting your body as it changes, and giving yourself the energy and strength to thrive in midlife and beyond.

What HYROX Taught Me (and Why I’m Hooked)
The best part of my HYROX experience? Realising that you don’t need hours in the gym or fancy kit to benefit from this style of training. You don’t even need to do the full HYROX circuit. I now break it down into 20–30 minute sessions for myself and my clients; quick, effective, and completely manageable in a busy schedule.
And now, especially with my own private gym in Colinton (still a pinch me moment to say that!), I can really tailor HYROX-style training for women who want to build strength, energy, and confidence. Bringing this type of workout into the space has given such a buzz to the room! It’s fun, it’s functional, and it’s empowering.
I’m also completely hooked myself. Glasgow was just the start. HYROX in Birmingham is next in October, and then HYROX London in December. To think I started my HYROX journey just after having Finn, he's 22 month now, and now I have two more to train for is just mad. But it keeps me sane, especially having something to focus on and train for - mainly because it's so manageable! And the atmosphere, the energy, the sense of achievement - it’s addictive!
The long-term benefits of HYROX-style training for women are huge. Even if competing isn’t your thing, weaving these movements into your routine means better strength, better cardiovascular health, and workouts that are genuinely time-efficient.
If you are thinking about an event, though, that’s where I can really help. Maybe you’re a gym member elsewhere and need a structured plan, or you’ve booked HYROX and are starting to panic about how to train. I can put together a 6–10 week programme to get you ready. Or, if you just want a new challenge without the pressure of a race, we can build HYROX-style circuits into your training to keep things fresh, fun, and effective.
You don’t have to sign up for a HYROX race to reap the benefits of HYROX-style training. For some, having a goal like that might be the perfect motivator. For others, it’s simply about feeling stronger, having more energy, and knowing your body can handle whatever life throws at it.
That’s where I come in. As a PT specialising in women’s health, perimenopause, and menopause, I’ll create training that works with your body, not against it. Whether it’s 1-1 sessions in my Colinton studio, small group PT, or online coaching you can take anywhere, I’ll help you build strength, confidence, and fitness that lasts.
