Keeping that Summer Mojo!

Can you believe we are already in June? Whether facing the summer with the kids off school, or the busier social schedule the sun brings - it definitely gets trickier to keep fitness top of the list!

I always think when summer hits we need to be super realistic with our goals and targets - I want to go to the BBQs, head off to the beach, catch up with friends at the festival, and I‘ve got the kids too -  I’m definitely less likely to be in the gym as much or for as long.

So, how do we keep that fitness mojo going strong while still enjoying all the fun, or survival of the kids, that summer has to offer?!

Here are ten top tips to help you stay active and feel great all summer long:

  1. Embrace Outdoor Workouts: Summer is the perfect time to take your workouts outside. Whether it's running, cycling, hiking, or even a beach workout, being outdoors can make exercise feel less like a chore and more like a fun activity. Plus, you get to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air!

  2. Incorporate Short, Effective Workouts: When your schedule is packed, long workouts can feel daunting. Instead, focus on short, effective workouts that can be done in 20-30 minutes. These workouts are great for burning calories and building strength without taking up too much of your time - allowing you to get it out the way and enjoy the rest of your day!

  3. Get the Family Involved: Turn fitness into a family affair. Go for a walk or bike ride together, play a game of football in the park, or get the kids involved in your workouts - perhaps they can hold the stopwatch! Not only will you stay active, but you'll also create lasting memories with your loved ones.

  4. Stay Hydrated and Eat Light: Hotter weather means you need to pay extra attention to hydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're exercising outdoors. Additionally, focus on light, nutritious meals that fuel your body without weighing you down. Fresh fruits, salads, and lean proteins are great choices.

  5. Be Flexible and Have Fun: Summer schedules can be unpredictable, so be flexible with your fitness routine. If you miss a workout don’t stress - just catch up another day.

  6. Make Fitness Social: Combine your social activities with fitness - join a running club, organise big walks with friends (even walk to the pub!), or get everyone together for a fun day of games - it’s much more enjoyable with pals!

  7. Use Your Commute: If you live close enough, consider walking or biking to work. This way, you incorporate exercise into your daily routine without needing extra time. Plus, it's a great way to start and end your day with some physical activity.

  8. Try New Activities: Summer is a great time to mix up your routine and try something new. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming are fantastic summer activities that provide a full-body workout and keep things fun and social!

  9. Set Flexible Goals: Be realistic and flexible with your fitness goals. Understand that your routine might not be as rigid as during other times of the year, and that's okay. Aim for consistency rather than perfection – even a 15-minute workout is better than none.

  10. Prioritize Morning Workouts: With the summer heat, mornings are often the coolest part of the day. Getting your workout done early can help you avoid the heat and give you an energy boost to tackle the rest of your day. You're also less likely to get roped into other things and sack it off!

Remember, the key to maintaining your fitness mojo over the summer is to stay flexible, have fun, and make the most of the usually not long lived Scottish Summer sunshine!
